This is a preview of Sunday’s PopRox column in the Pocono Record. Have we all enjoyed the silly portion of Awards Season, reading all those really important stories about movies honored by such cherished and distinguished groups like the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards and the Online Film Critics Society Awards? Or the Golden Collar Awards? [...] |
Modern Family Swearing, LL Rising, Cougar Town Returning and More Normally, I’d take any opportunity to stick it to the Hollywood studio machine. So under normal circumstances, this Internet blackout thing would be right up my alley. But a couple of things intervened: 1. Because of my schedule (took a four-day weekend for my nephew’s first birthday in Virginia Beach, I’m not apologizing for that), I haven’t put [...] |
(This is a preview of Sunday’s PopRox column in the Pocono Record.) Winter used to be a TV wasteland. Networks premiered their best shows in September and used midseason replacements as filler to get them through the year. Not anymore. The winter season now means more good TV shows starting up than ever before, so here [...] |
Coachella Lineup, the Return of Mad Men, and the Party Down and 24 Movies Programming note: We might be a little light this week, sorry. Links today, Sunday column preview Thursday, and then I’ll try to fit one in another day, but can’t guarantee it. Hitting the links: PopRoxers know there isn’t too much in here about music, but I do get excited when Coachella and Bonnaroo announce their lineups [...] |
If the DVD Wars Haven’t Begun Already, They Have Now Way too light on local links this week. What, is everyone still hungover? In the absence of that, let’s hit some links: Hollywood studios don’t like being taken advantage of. So when they built a business model in the early 90s that depended on DVD sales, they just didn’t expect things like Netflix, Redbox or OnDemand [...] |
Going Beyond the Franchises of 2012 This is a preview of what’s coming in Sunday’s PopRox column in the Pocono Record. You already know about the big ones — Batman, James Bond, The Avengers, Spider-Man, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games. Yeah, 2012 is chock-full of your favorite heroes and mystical places, but that’s not all there is. The 2012 movie slate [...] |
January is Cold, but at Least There is Stuff to Watch For as cold and awful as January is around here, it’s at least a good time to be a pop culture fan. January has become the launch date for what amounts to almost a second TV season and awards season movies start trickling out for the masses (us) to see. And not just into theaters, [...] |
Your New Year’s Eve special Edition Weekend Fun Guide Happy New Year everyone! Time to get to the marathon of New Year’s Eve events around the Poconos. I got to as many as I could, of people that let me know in one way or the other, it’s about as comprehensive a list as I could make. Goes without saying, but I’ll say it [...] |
Get Your New Year’s Eve Parties in Now! Sorry I haven’t been able to post this week. Can’t guarantee I’ll have anything tomorrow either, but I’m gearing up for Friday by trying to compile the most complete list of cool things going on around the Poconos for New Year’s Eve. If you’re a bar and have something going on, if you know of some cool party everyone is invited to or if you just want to start an event and want to get the word out, email it in to me or send an invite on the PopRox Facebook page. I’m going to make an effort to list at least 20 events I know of going on, then you can choose what you want to do Saturday night. I’m pretty sure I’m hitting First Night in Scranton (kid-friendly) and Mohegan Sun (mom and dad friendly). But if someone wows me with something going on, maybe I’ll change course and stay out here. If you do email something in to me, try to sell it. Lemme know the best parts of the event, things that other places won’t have (open bar, all ages, kids invited for unlucky SOBs that can’t find a babysitter) so I can make sure to sell it too. I’ll be back to post all the ones I get in the Poconos (take note of that) on Friday. |
Your Christmas Weekend Fun Guide Have a great holiday, everyone! I’m always thankful for anyone who reads this, you make my holiday season a little brighter. Thanks! Some local links, then some bonus ones because I’m in the giving Christmas mood. As always, email me or send the invites to the PopRox Facebook page if you want your event be [...] |
